In 2006, under the leadership of Jordan Brown, a special education teacher in Bay City Independent School District, Bay City began its own Challenger Baseball League with the hope of providing children with an opportunity to enjoy the full benefits of Little League participation at a level structured to their abilities. Players were able to be part of a team, develop social skills, and build self-esteem while members of the community gathered to celebrate and encourage all who participated.

In its first year of action, Bay City Challenger League Baseball kicked off opening day with one league uniform, 13 players, and a great group of supportive people. By the 2008 season the Bay City area had caught wind of this great event, and the league tripled in size, moving to 37 players, two teams, over 100 volunteers, and 31 sponsorships.

In 2009, the league experienced continued support from the community through volunteers, buddies, coaches, and sponsors, making it possible to expand the schedule to 6 teams, feauturing some new-look uniforms for all!

In 2010, Challenger's 6 teams and over 40 players, continued with great participation from buddies, volunteers, and 30 sponsors. With it's Opening ceremonies, multi-week schedule, and Closing fesitivities, the league's great response and community presence continued to impact the Matagorda County area.

In 2011, Challanger celebrated its 5th year anniversary with new t-shirts, more fun, and the same excitement and enthusiasm that Challenger is built on. With its 6 teams, great coaches, and wonderful particpating families, Challenger's 5th year anniversary was sure to be topped only by its 6th.

Where we are now

Today, this organized event is brought to the county under the direction of Bay City Little League and Challenger Coordinator Jordan Brown Piwonka. A vision has been cast for continual expansion and increased participation as Challenger Baseball continues to grow in the Bay City area. With the support of the community and the work of volunteers, the Challenger league is continues to grow as it links America’s Pastime with the hearts of champions. Having celebrated a successful 10th Anniversary season in 2016, the players and fans are excited for all the this 11th season will bring!
